I’m currently in the process of writing up some decent MS articles, so bear with me while I try to finish those up.
This post is about my experience getting an annual fee refund on an Amex card. According to common knowledge, Amex will refund the entire annual fee if you cancel/change your card within one statement after it’s charged. I had a Delta Gold card I got in December of 2014, and the annual fee was charged 18 January, the same day my statement closed. I called in and changed it over to a no annual fee Hilton card on the 23 January, five days after it was charged. I recently checked my statement, and I was credited $87.08 on 16 February. I contacted Amex customer service and was informed that they only refund on a prorated basis, even though it was changed over five days later. Thankfully, the agent was nice enough to issue me a credit for the remaining amount, but that might not be the case for everyone.
Just a heads up that this may happen to other people. If you have plans of cancelling/changing an Amex card to avoid the annual fee, it might be better to do so before it’s charged rather than after.
